About the club

SMU Climb Team was established in September 2005. It was established with the aim of sharing our passion for climbing with the rest of the community through the sharing of experiences and the impartation of new skills. In the process, we aspire to develop as a team and to challenge ourselves as we embark on a journey of self-discovery and adventure together.

Climb Team FAQ

Climb Team FAQ
(Updated 25 June 2008)

1) A what team?
Yup that’s right we’re a climb team! Even though we’re called a climb TEAM, we not really a team in the traditional sense with a competitive team, a coach, and a rigid training programme. We’re just a bunch of people who like to climb stuff =).

2) So what do you climb exactly?
Well we do mainly rock climbing and bouldering. We do it either on artificial rock walls or on natural rock formations (Yes, there are some in Singapore!).

3) Rock climbing? Sounds dangerous!
We’d be lying if we said that it wasn’t dangerous, but it isn’t that much more dangerous than cycling, swimming or almost any other sport for that fact. All you need to do to keep yourself safe during a climb, is just to 1) Use your common sense 2) Learn the right techniques 3) Follow 1 & 2.

4) Do I need any special equipment or skills to climb?
Nope! A comfy top, and bottoms is all you need! Oh but don’t forget yourself too!

5) But isn’t climbing hard? I don’t have very strong arms…
Climbing isn’t all about having strong arms! You’ll be surprised at how small or petite some of our climbers are. Climbing requires the coordination of the entire body. From the arms to the legs, abs and even your toes! It’s great fun and a great workout too.

6) So where can I find you guys?
Our usual hangout is inside the Sports Hall, Lvl 3, SMU Administration Building. Just walk up the escalators and into the sports hall and you’ll see our wall straight away =D. We’ll be there 3 times a week for training, but don’t worry, even though we say it’s a training session *anyone is welcomed to come tryout the wall!

For summer 2008 (Till Aug 17th) our training times are:

Tuesday: 7pm – 10pm
Thursdays: 730pm – 10pm
Saturday: 3pm – 6pm

*Just to take note, if you are not an SMU student, or staff. Do email in to us FIRST if you wish to come down and climb/boulder on our wall. We will need to prepare some paperwork before hand. It’s not that we don’t like outside climbers but it’s due mainly to the requirements of our university’s administrative requirements.
